She and her sisters Julia and Finn are painted together in what becomes a world famous art piece - The Sisters Mortland. And while this painting does figure prominently in the story, it is the life they lived together in their home in the English Countryside that is the important part of the story: a home that used to belong to a Nunnery. It is there in the old Abbey that something so disastrous to Maisie happens that it tears the family apart. It also becomes the mystery of the family because no one really understands what happened. Maisie, being the only one who could explain - can't, as she no longer talks after the incident.
This event shakes everyone near to the family and part of the book is a reconstruction of the events leading up to the incident by a close family friend - Dan - who has been a friend since childhood. But even Dan is at a loss to figure out what happened.
This book was interesting to read because of the architecture of the house the Mortland family lived in. The house used to be a Nunnery from the 1300s and there were secret places to hide and beautiful rooms that were detailed quite nicely. The house was also laid out near some woods and had lovely landscaping. I liked reading about this house and the land as it was a character in the book by its own right.
